  18. <p>     Sarajevo lacks many essentials--food, water, medical supplies--but according to Renaissance woman SUSAN SONTAG, the city
  19. also needs something seemingly less basic: theater of the absurd.
  20. Sontag has chosen to direct Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot
  21. in the bleak, ruined city. She feels that the play, which concerns
  22. two outcasts--homeless and hungry, waiting for help that never
  23. comes--has a particular metaphoric richness in the Bosnian
  24. capital. The production runs through the end of September and
  25. opened to a packed house, the audience remaining silent even
  26. as United Nations tanks blasted by. "I didn't want to be a tourist
  27. here," Sontag told the Washington Post. "I wanted to give something,
  28. to contribute."
