- <p> Sarajevo lacks many essentials--food, water, medical supplies--but according to Renaissance woman SUSAN SONTAG, the city
- also needs something seemingly less basic: theater of the absurd.
- Sontag has chosen to direct Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot
- in the bleak, ruined city. She feels that the play, which concerns
- two outcasts--homeless and hungry, waiting for help that never
- comes--has a particular metaphoric richness in the Bosnian
- capital. The production runs through the end of September and
- opened to a packed house, the audience remaining silent even
- as United Nations tanks blasted by. "I didn't want to be a tourist
- here," Sontag told the Washington Post. "I wanted to give something,
- to contribute."
